Root Canal Therapy

What is a root canal?

A root canal is one of the most common dental procedures performed, well over 14 million every year. This simple treatment can save your natural teeth and prevent the need of dental implants or bridges.

At the center of your tooth is pulp. Pulp is a collection of blood vessels that helps to build the surrounding tooth. Infection of the pulp can be caused by trauma to the tooth, deep decay, cracks and chips, or repeated dental procedures. Symptoms of the infection can be identified as visible injury or swelling of the tooth, sensitivity to temperature or pain in the tooth and gums.

If you experience any of these symptoms, your dentist will most likely recommend non-surgical treatment to eliminate the diseased pulp. This injured pulp is removed and the root canal system is thoroughly cleaned and sealed. This therapy usually involves local anesthesia and may be completed in one or more visits depending on the treatment required. Success for this type of treatment occurs in about 90% of cases. If your tooth is not amenable to endodontic treatment or the chance of success is unfavorable, you will be informed at the time of consultation or when a complication becomes evident during or after treatment. We use local anesthesia to eliminate discomfort. In addition, we will provide nitrous oxide analgesia, if indicated. You will be able to drive home after your treatment, and you probably will be comfortable returning to your normal routine.

What happens after treatment?

When your root canal therapy has been completed, a record of your treatment will be sent to your restorative dentist. You should contact their office for a follow-up restoration within a few weeks of completion at our office. Your restorative dentist will decide on what type of restoration is necessary to protect your tooth. It is rare for endodontic patients to experience complications after routine endodontic treatment or microsurgery. If a problem does occur, however, we are available at all times to respond. To prevent further decay, continue to practice good dental hygiene.

How much will it cost?

The cost associated with this procedure can vary depending on factors such as the severity of damage to the affected tooth and which tooth is affected. In general, endodontic treatment is much less expensive than tooth removal and replacement with an artificial tooth.

I enjoyed the informal relaxed environment. It was enjoyable to hear about the cats roaming at night and about kids adventures in pre-school.

I was referred to the office by my dentist because of a bad tooth that was way too sensitive and he couldn’t find anything on the ex-rays so when I arrived at Missouri Dental Specialist they gave me the whole deal trying to find out what was going on and since I have such sensitivity going on Dr.Jannson and Emily were very caring about it and understood how I felt. He seen the ex-rays and a scan and showed lots of swelling in my root and slight cracks so right there he did a root canal on one and another root canal on another, apparently I had way too much sensitivity in both teeth , the staff are very sweet and patient and understanding, thank you all for everything and your kindness for someone who is very nervous about having teeth touched , don’t ever change in how you handle patients because how you were with me will gain a lifetime of trust , I will always come back to you all if I ever need to again , thank you so much!!

I went in just to see what the cause of my discomfort was and they ended up doing a root canal on the spot. My pain has gone away already. Dr. Jansson and his staff were very caring and their humor helped the time fly by during the actual procedure. I would highly recommend Missouri Dental Specialists.

I was referred to Dr.Jannson from my hometown dentist. I had to have 3 root canals redone from 45 years ago. Dr.Jannson worked way after hours to do 2 teeth then he had me to return at 5:30am to do the other tooth. Who has ever heard of a doctor being so dedicated to his patients. My sister n myself are cancer patients we are taking care of each other so she was with me. The staff made my sister comfortable while I was getting worked on. Since it was so late when Dr got 2 teeth done n we were to return at 5:30am n we drove a long ways to Jeffcity Dr.Jannson offered to put my sister n I in a motel. What a blessing it was cause we were wore out. With me doing chemo Dr.Jannson wanted to do all he could so I could continue my treatments. Dr.Jannson and his staff are a blessing to have at the dental office thank you very much for everything you all have done for my sister n myself.

This (root canal) was my first ever procedure of this nature. Dr. Jannsen put me at ease and performed the procedure contrary to all of the "horror" stories I heard regarding the procedure. I would recommend he and his staff to ANYONE. If I ever have to have this procedure done again, I will not hesitate to contact Missouri Dental Specialist and Dr. Jannsen again. Thank you!

We were referred by our local dental facility on a same-day immediate need, due to my child accidentally breaking a front tooth. They made room for us that same afternoon, understanding that we had to travel 1-1/2 hours to get there. When we arrived, I was impressed by the team's friendliness and professionalism. First visit, I needed to fill-out a two-page form and sign a few things (the usual). My child is special needs and the team handled him with care - as if he were their own. After 32 years in the Army, I'm critical about everything I see. I was amazed at the kind treatment we were receiving, even though it was near closing time. I'm also very observant in detail: the facility is exceptionally clean, well organized, the equipment clearly the latest technology and comfortable. What struck me the most was the professionalism and efficiency that was demonstrated as I watched Dr. Jansson and Liza (Dental Assitant) work; there was almost no verbal communication between them as they switched "tools" and performed the root canal procedure, completing it in less than 20 minutes from the moment they started (not including numbing up the site). And their conservation with us throughout was friendly and enjoyable. My son actually did not complain throughout the experience - and that is AMAZING. Nothing like it. My child is a happy camper today. Strongly recommend this facility and will request them in the future for similar needs.

I was extremely satisfied with Dr. Jansson and his staff. From the moment we entered the practice his staff was welcoming. When the Dr. came in he asked my daughter questions about the procedure, and helped her understand the process. I felt like that in itself should be recognized. He could have explained everything to me, however he knew that I was right there to hear it, so he focused his questions and explanations to my daughter. She was very nervous however Dr. Jansson and his staff operated in a manner where she sat through the procedure without any issues. Honestly, if you didn't know he was doing a root canal you would have assumed he was performing a filling! To say this group is top notch would be an understatement. This group is awesome! ....Even "Owie"!

I was referred to Dr. Jansson for a root canal by my dentist. His receptionist was great and got me in very quickly. I have had two root canals in the past and swore I would never have another due to how much pain I was in after the procedures. However, when you are told that a root canal is what you need you don't really have a whole lot of choice. I have been totally amazed at how different my experience was this time with Dr. Jansson and his staff. My procedure was two days ago and I have had only mild discomfort which was easily managed with ibuprofen and today I am basically pain free. Not to say that I will ever be "ready" to have a root canal, but Dr. Jansson certainly has made me realize that they don't have to be a miserable experience. I would very highly recommend Missouri Dental Specialists! Thank you Dr. Jansson and staff!
